Welcome to Deer Isle House

This house has a history yet to be discovered. It was built around 1880 and overlooks Northwest Harbor just to the north side of the small village of Deer Isle. The village was the hub of island politics and a prosperous fishing trade until the early 1900's when granite became an important commodity. After that, Stonington became the most populous town, and remains so today. You can check under the Links button for more Deer Isle history.
There seem to be 3 versions of this house. In the attic, one can find what is left of the original roof, complete with wooden shakes. It was slightly smaller, and was just the front part of the building. Sometime along the way, the present, larger, very Victorian house was built. In the late 1980's a rear section was added that has a large garage and workshop area, and a small apartment. The house was called the Deer Isle Village Inn from 1986 to 2006, and was run as a B&B. The apartment served as the innkeeper's quarters.
